‘First educate the child.’ Joseph Pilates (1883-1967)
Elizabeth Anderson, Executive Director of the Pilates Method Alliance shares her excitement about the PMA’s collaboration with Handspring Publishing which will see publication in early 2014 of the first ever Manual of Guidelines and Curriculum for Pilates teachers working with children and young people.
Over the last 10 years I’ve been involved with the Pilates Method Alliance (PMA) as a member, a board member, and as Executive Director since 2007. Over that time, I’ve witnessed the hard work done with the PMA’s Pilates in the Schools pilot research studies, and the birth of our current Pilates Youth Program. Now in 2014, our continued efforts and dedication to Pilates for young people will yield a new book!
I am so excited that in March 2014 the PMA and Handspring Publishing will launch Pilates for Children and Adolescents: Manual of Guidelines and Curriculum.
We know that Joseph Pilates said ‘First educate the child.’, in the belief that healthy habits started in childhood can form a foundation for healthy living throughout adulthood. Given all the opportunities we have today to be sedentary, it is more important than ever for children and adolescents to invest in their physical health, and by so doing their mental and spiritual health. Self esteem, good posture, energy and the ability to focus our minds and attention, are all important attributes for young people to have a positive experience of living, and success in school and home life. This book will be a fantastic tool for Pilates teachers who want to work with children, but want to make sure they are working safely and appropriately with different age groups.
I can’t wait to see the finished product!
